HIV & AIDS
AIDS-related diseases are killing nearly 8,000 people a day, most of them in poor countries. Nearly 40 million people now live with HIV and AIDS - and more than half of them live in Africa.
Think of all the friends you have ever had. Now imagine one in five of them are HIV positive - and there is little or no treatment available.
The HIV and AIDS pandemic is sweeping people away. Every minute six people die of AIDS-related illnesses. Teachers, nurses, mothers and fathers, indiscriminately.
Now a treatable condition, people with HIV should be living healthy and productive lives. But this is not happening. Medicines available to treat people living with HIV remain unreachable for most people in poor countries.
In countries with high prevalence of HIV and AIDS, women often experience violence and discrimination, both of which put them at increased risk of infection.
People have the right to life and dignity in the face of HIV and AIDS. We support them to secure these rights, as well as free treatment and other essential care and support.
Fact file
2,876 women contract HIV every day.

ActionAid's Approach

We treat the AIDS crisis like HIV itself - as a virus that needs treatment urgently. There is no cure, so prevention is essential.
