Garment workers are facing hunger, poverty, and can’t feed their families. All while big fashion brands continue to make huge profits during COVID-19.
Even before the pandemic, garment workers – the majority of whom are women – were paid some of the lowest wages in the world. They endured harsh working conditions like gruelling hours and threats of sexual harassment and violence.
COVID-19 has made this situation worse. When brands cancel or refuse to pay for orders, or pressure factories to give discounts, they push the financial costs of this global pandemic onto women who are already highly exploited.
ActionAid stands with women on the frontlines of global injustice. The #SheWearsTheCost campaign is an urgent call to brands in Australia to uphold the rights of women who make their clothes.
