Following news of the massive earthquake that has devastated Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, ActionAid Nepal’s Country Director Bimal Phnuyal said:
“There is so much damage, so much destruction. The needs are huge. Search and rescue and direct relief – food, water, medical supplies – are the immediate priorities, and shelter. So many homes have collapsed.”
“Not only is the death rate increasing fast as news trickles in from outlying areas but we’re already seeing lots of trauma and appalling crush injuries.”
“Our hospitals are doing their best but they are struggling.”
“What’s heartening is that people are coming together in large groups and sharing what they have. Nepal will depend on such community spirit in the days ahead.”
Temperatures are dropping quickly as many people bed down in the open air, too scared to return to their homes.
ActionAid has worked in Nepal for over 30 years and the areas where it has programmes are amongst the worst affected. ActionAid is already liasing with government ministries and emergency response agencies about how best to respond.
