“For these women, deciding to tell and share their experience is already a big step. It’s first step towards a different awareness of their rights.”
On September 2018, earthquakes struck Indonesia. They were followed by a tsunami that destroyed the homes and livelihoods of thousands of people living on the island of Palu.
More than 2,000 people lost their lives and 1.4 million were left displaced.
Women are always at higher risk of violence and trafficking in the aftermath of emergencies like this. Their voices and needs are not heard by authorities. Male leaders don’t recognise their skills in helping their communities to recover.
ActionAid is on the ground, providing training on women’s rights. We’re helping women learn new farming methods which are critical to helping women rebuild their lives after a huge disaster.
Will you make a donation today? Your help could enable more women in Indonesia to rebuild their lives and be prepared for future disasters.
