Friends band together to raise funds for Palestine

The Sydney suburb of Annandale was recently lit up by the People for Palestine Arts Fundraiser – an initiative of a group of friends motivated to bring together an inspiring evening of music, art, and delicious food, all in support of ActionAid’s Gaza Crisis Appeal.

Coordinated by three friends – Leki, Lil, and Charlotte – alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, the event showcased the power of community in action. Together, they leveraged their skills, creativity, and networks to raise an incredible $11,800 through ticket sales, donations, a raffle, and art sales.

Event organiser Charlotte says that she wanted to mobilise her friends and wider community to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. “Like many, we’ve been deeply disappointed by the Australian Government and international community’s response,” she said”. “We felt the need for grassroots action. It’s vital that we come together and support Palestinians in any way we can.”

Held in Annandale, the evening drew around 150 guests and was run entirely through volunteer efforts and donations. Attendees enjoyed live music, poetry, and art, accompanied by a beautiful Middle Eastern meal, with all proceeds being donated to ActionAid.

“We were drawn to ActionAid’s women-centred, locally led approach,” said Charlotte. “It was also important to us that funds reach those in need despite the blockade. Knowing ActionAid’s long-standing presence and trusted partnerships in Palestine gave us confidence that the money raised would directly support people in Gaza.”

Charlotte and her friends were overwhelmed by the support they received from the community, and have encouraged others to start their own fundraisers.

“People are always willing to help but their networks are often their biggest contribution. Early on, we made a list of everything needed to make the event a success and shared it with friends and family. The response was overwhelming – everything was donated, from food, beer, and wine to artwork. Artists and musicians even volunteered their time to perform.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for support. You’ll be amazed by how many people are eager to chip in when given the opportunity.”
