All states are legally bound under international law, including international humanitarian law and the UN Charter, to protect civilians. ActionAid recognises the longstanding suffering of both Palestinian and Iranian people under decades of repression and restrictions on fundamental freedoms. ActionAid emphasises that regional peace is inseparable from global peace and relies on accountability for violations of human rights and international law for all parties. In an already volatile international system, renewed conflict in the Arab Region will have far reaching economic, political, and social consequences across the world.
This escalation is occurring as global food insecurity reaches alarming levels, with conflict driving the majority of hunger crises worldwide. Disruptions to supply chains, fuel provision, and trade routes are likely to push food and fuel prices even higher, meaning the burdens of this conflict will again fall heaviest on the most vulnerable people, especially those living in poverty and struggling with rising living costs.
Sustainable peace can only be secured through diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for human rights – not through military campaigns. ActionAid stands in unwavering solidarity with all civilians affected by this crisis. We call for an immediate ceasefire, urgent protection of civilians, and a peaceful, just, and durable resolution in full compliance with international law. We also call for accountability of all parties who are in violation of human rights and international law.
