Gas companies in Australia are set to reap an extra $18 billion in revenue from the fallout of the US and Israel’s illegal war on Iran, according to new projections from the Australian Government.
Fossil fuel companies are making billions out of driving the climate crisis, while everyday Australians are reeling as costs rise and insecurity grows. With every degree of global warming, all of us are paying a price – especially women.
It’s time we make the big polluters pay for the climate damage they’ve caused. The pollution caused by coal, oil, and gas is driving climate change and is one of the greatest threats to all the progress we’ve made on gender equality.
With every degree of global warming, more women are losing their livelihoods, their access to food and clean water, and they’re facing increased violence.
Murshida’s home was destroyed by floods in July 2026. Almost every year, floods, waterlogging, or other climate-related disasters force her family to start over. To support her family, she takes whatever work she can find—whether in nearby salt fields or as a domestic worker. Like many women in the community, she rebuilds her life one day at a time after each disaster.
How a gas tax can support women impacted by the climate crisis
Earlier this year, ActionAid supporters joined our partners to demand a 25% tax on gas export revenue to make big polluters pay their fair share. Together, we mobilised over 250,000 Australians to back the call.
A 25% levy on gas exports would raise an estimated $17 billion a year. This would be a good start to raising much-needed funds for cost-of-living relief, housing, investment in renewable energy, and direct support to women and communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
Unfortunately, the government decided against a 25% tax – for now. But the campaign is not over, and momentum is growing every day.
