ActionAid Condemns Israel’s Occupation of Gaza City

ActionAid is appalled by the Israeli government’s decision to occupy Gaza City and unequivocally condemns this blatant escalation. This occupation will forcibly displace hundreds of thousands more Palestinians, people who have already been displaced multiple times, stripped of their homes, their rights, and their safety.

Jamil Sawalmeh, Country Director of ActionAid Palestine, says:

“This decision will not only displace hundreds of thousands more people, but it will uproot families who have nowhere left to go. The people of Gaza are being deliberately starved and subjected to relentless violence. Exhausted and traumatised Palestinians in Gaza, are being forced into endless cycles of displacement and devastation, they are trapped in an ever-shrinking space, facing the complete collapse of infrastructure and the total absence of safety. Women and marginalised communities bear the brunt of this violence, many now facing displacement for the second, third, or even fourth time in their lives, without access to shelter, food, healthcare, or basic services.

“These actions are not only morally indefensible, but they are also clear violations of international law, including the prohibitions against forcible transfer of populations, annexation of occupied territory, and the denial of the right to self-determination.

Forced displacement is a tool of domination that tears communities apart and entrenches cycles of poverty, trauma, and gender-based violence. This is not just a humanitarian catastrophe, it is the continuation of a long-standing project of settler-colonial expansion and ethnic cleansing.

“We call on the international community to go beyond statements of concern. Third States must take urgent, concrete action to stop land seizures, prevent annexation, and hold those responsible to account. Silence and inaction are complicity.”
