ActionAid raises alarm at aid cuts under Coalition costings
ActionAid Australia is alarmed at costings released by the Coalition ahead of Saturday’s federal election, which show $813 million would be cut from Australian Aid if they are elected to form government.
At a time when women and their communities are facing increased conflict, climate disasters and continued pushback on their rights and freedoms, a cut to international aid is a step backwards that will push the world’s most marginalised women further into poverty and deepen gender inequality.
As a wealthy country, Australia should be increasing Australian Aid to at least 1% of the federal budget. This is critical in supporting peace, stability and the advancement of women’s rights across our region and globally.
ActionAid calls on all political parties to stand with women facing poverty and injustice, by providing the resources through the Australian Aid Program for communities to respond to crises and work towards achieving gender equality.
