ActionAid Statement on the occasion of Vanuatu's 40th Anniversary of Independence

Today as Vanuatu celebrates 40 years of independence, ActionAid congratulates the Vanuatu Government and Ni-Vanuatu people around the country on such an important milestone in the journey to self-determination. We are proud to have been part of this story over the past five years, which has highlighted the incredible resilience, determination and courage of the Vanuatu people.

Since Tropical Cyclone Pam in 2015, ActionAid has worked alongside the Ministry of Justice and Community Services and Department of Women’s Affairs to support women in rural and coastal communities to strengthen their voice and collective contribution to shaping the nation.  Through the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta forums, Ni-Vanuatu women in Eton, Erromango and Tanna are supporting their families and communities to prepare for and respond to increasing impacts of disasters and climate change, building on their existing capacity, localised knowledge and community networks.

Today, we affirm the incredible contribution that Ni-Vanuatu women have made towards shaping Vanuatu since independence, their vital role in families and communities, and their increasing engagement in public life, which is contributing to more equal and inclusive decision making. While challenges remain in the journey towards gender equality, as is the case everywhere in the world, there is great promise in realising the full potential of everyone, and all genders walking together in defining a shared vision for the next 40 years.
