The pandemic has exposed serious weaknesses in the global economy and imbalances in the global rules-based system, which has for too long prioritised economic imperatives over human rights and security. It is crucial that the Government consider these deficiencies in its international COVID-19 response. Reform of trade policy and debt relief and restructuring are necessary to mitigate some of the worst impacts of the crisis and to ensure that the global community emerges from this pandemic stronger, healthier and more resilient to future crises. There are also key opportunities to advance the Australian Government’s commitment to gender equality through targeted policies and investment.
