Make Big Polluters Pay

To: Prime Minister Albanese and Governments around the world,

we demand coal, oil and gas corporations pay their fair share through significant new taxes and fines to help communities around the world recover and rebuild from climate impacts and invest in climate solutions.

For far too long, big polluting companies have violated women’s rights, and poisoned air, water and land.

Coal, oil and gas companies have deprived people of the clean water and nutritious food they need to stay healthy, driven communities from their homes, destroyed their livelihoods, and made them sick.

These companies are also fuelling the climate crisis.

Just 57 companies – including four in Australia – are responsible for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016. Their businesses are driving climate impacts that cause devastation to women and their communities around the world – from wildfires here in Australia to sea level rise and cyclones in the Pacific.

In Australia, these corporations are responsible for 75% of Australia’s climate pollution – but they’re taking billions in government handouts and often pay less tax in Australia than our teachers or nurses.

It’s unfair, and it’s unjust.

We think it’s time the Government made sure these companies start paying for the harm they’ve done, and contribute to the cost of transitioning away from fossil fuels.

It’s time to make polluters pay.

That’s why ActionAid has joined the Make Big Polluters Pay Alliance, supports the Make Polluters Pay Pact, and is backing the global Make Big Polluters Pay campaign.
