Dear ANZ,

It’s time to take a stand for women’s rights and gender equality, by ending your finance to fossil fuel companies once and for all.

ANZ, you’ve made a global commitment to supporting the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees. Experts say there’s no room for any new fossil fuels if we’re going to achieve it.

Yet you’re continuing to bankroll fossil fuel companies to the tune of billions of dollars, having given over $20 billion from when the Paris Agreement was signed to early 2024 – more than any other Australian bank.

The fossil fuel industry is exploiting women in low-income countries and violating their rights. Coal, oil, and gas projects are polluting the environment, killing food and income sources like fish, and harming local people’s health. Your funds are enabling the aggressive expansion of companies like Santos in Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste, and Woodside in Senegal.

Fossil fuels are causing unimaginable climate destruction.

More frequent and intense disasters – from cyclones to wildfires – are devastating communities, and the costs to recover and rebuild are pushing Pacific countries into extreme debt. It’s women, especially in the Global South, who are worst impacted – despite having done the least to cause the climate crisis.

It’s not enough to say you aren’t funding most new or expanded fossil fuel projects. In 2023, 98% of banks’ fossil fuel lending was through corporate loans.

ANZ, if you’re committed to being a climate leader and a champion of gender equality, you must change your policies to end all financing to fossil fuel companies now.
