“In all my life, I had never seen a flood like this,” she says.
Nanimaya has spent much of her life caring for her family. She provides a home for her daughter, cares for her older sister and relies on the surrounding land to help support the household.
Within moments, the river changed course and everything changed with it.
Two large plots of fertile farmland were buried beneath sand and debris. Her paddy crop was lost, while a banana plantation that was almost ready for harvest was destroyed.
The flood also buried her son’s heavy sewing machine, which he depended on to earn an income as a tailor.
In the confusion of escaping, Nanimaya had to leave her mobile phone behind. Without it, she was unable to contact the people she might normally turn to for information or support.
“I don’t know where to go, whom to call or what to do. I cannot sleep. I do not feel hungry. I have nothing.” she says
The farmland was more than a piece of property. It provided food and income and helped sustain several members of Nanimaya’s family. Now, much of it is covered by sand and debris, leaving her uncertain about how they will recover.
Standing beside the land her family once depended on, Nanimaya’s immediate concern is whether they will receive support to rebuild their livelihood.
“Will we receive any compensation for this farmland?” she asks.
ActionAid’s response
Working alongside local partners, ActionAid has begun distributing emergency relief to affected communities in Rasuwa.
As of 30 August 2026, this support included:
- 1.4 tonnes of food supplies, including beaten rice, mixed dalmot and roasted chickpeas
- 200 blankets
- 180 sleeping bags
ActionAid’s emergency response will prioritise the most vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, children, older people, persons with disabilities and families that have lost homes or livelihoods. We’re working through trusted local partners, volunteers and community networks to reach people who need help most – including communities in hard-to-reach areas. At the same time, we’re coordinating with government and humanitarian partners to make sure our response is targeted, timely and strengthens the wider humanitarian effort.
