Could your bank be among the world's worst?

New data released this week in a report endorsed by ActionAid shows that Australian banks are still pumping billions of dollars into fossil fuels.

The annual Banking on Climate Chaos report shows how the world’s biggest 65 banks are enabling the dirty coal, oil and gas industries to continue to grow – even as the effects of the fossil-fuelled climate crisis could not be clearer.

Australia’s big four banks continue to support fossil fuels

Here in Australia, ANZ has kept its ranking as the worst of Australia’s big banks. In 2025 alone, ANZ funnelled close to AU$3 billion to fossil fuel companies like Woodside and Santos – almost twice as much as the next biggest Australian bank.

ANZ wasn’t alone. The new report shows that in 2025 Westpac and NAB also bankrolled the fossil fuel industry to the tune of over AU$1.4 billion each. And while Commonwealth Bank promised in 2024 that it would stop funding fossil fuel companies that didn’t align with the Paris Agreement’s climate goals by the end of the year, the report shows that the Commonwealth Bank’s finance to companies actively expanding fossil fuels increased by 39% in 2025 against the previous year.

Women are paying the biggest price

The pollution caused by coal, oil and gas that is driving climate change is one of the greatest threats to all the progress we’ve made on gender equality. The data is crystal clear – with every degree of global warming, women are paying the biggest price. It’s women who lose their livelihoods. Women who lose access to food and clean water. Women who face increased violence.

We need to put an end to fossil fuels – and that means putting an end to the finance that’s bankrolling the industry.

While big banks are promising they’re taking action to address climate change, their lending decisions tell a different story. We need to stand strong and keep holding them to account – and demand they change.

It’s women on the frontlines who pay the price of the fossil fuel industry’s profits. From environmental defenders who face violence for protesting dirty coal, oil or gas projects in their communities, to women leading in their communities as they face harsh impacts of climate change or pollution from fossil fuel extraction, we must stand with them and take action.

We need your support – tell the ANZ bank CEO to stop bankrolling the climate crisis. Sign the letter today.
