About

The Philippines ranks as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, with communities highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Due to existing gender inequalities, the climate crisis impacts women differently. While there is recognition of the specific needs of women during crises, enhancing their participation in leadership and decision-making roles, along with acknowledging the diversity among women, remains crucial.

This project aims to empower women leaders and young people through the Women in Emergencies Network (WENet), enabling them to lead their communities in promoting gender inclusivity, disaster risk reduction and management, and climate adaptation. In doing so, they will build resilient and sustainable communities where the rights of the most vulnerable people in the community are protected.

Impact

The ‘Women leading actions for gender-responsive and inclusive DRR and climate change in the Philippines’ project commenced in July 2022. Its goal is to train women and young people in gender inclusivity, advocacy, and disaster risk management. The project includes leadership training sessions for participants from various organisations. Participants engage with local government units, to influence policy-and decision-making. These activities are already helping women and young people strengthen their leadership skills and protect vulnerable groups during crises. The project will also continue to support the WENet to ensure these communities remain strong and resilient.
