Movement Support Intern

15.01.25

Do you have a passion for women’s rights and climate justice? Are you someone who enjoys working and connecting with people?

Join us as an intern to support the growth of ActionAid’s campaigning impact and help drive change for women living in poverty and exclusion around the world.

  • Sydney or Melbourne (Melbourne preferred)
  • Volunteer position
  • 4-5 hours per week, 6-month minimum engagement

About the volunteer position

Working with our campaigns team members, the Movement Support Intern will play a crucial role in refreshing and developing ActionAid Australia’s engagement with its community of campaign supporters, including by offering new opportunities for people across Australia to back our work.

With a focus on supporter recruitment and retention, and supporting online-to-offline organising, this role will build the power of our network by ensuring our systems and processes are up to date and innovative. Currently, ActionAid Australia has activist groups in Sydney and Melbourne – this role will work with our campaign team to engage our most committed supporters, and help create and deliver a range of new ways for them to take action with us.

This role may have other duties as required, such as helping organise events and/or actions. This intern will get the opportunity to be exposed to ActionAid’s grassroots and campaigns work, and hone their skills in areas such as community organising, engagement, volunteer support, and feminist leadership.

The organisation

ActionAid Australia is part of a federation working in over 70 countries to advance women’s rights and end poverty and injustice. We support women on the frontlines of injustice overseas and campaigns in Australia to advance climate justice for women and gender equality, working to shift government policy and corporate practice that undermine the rights of people living in poverty.

ActionAid Australia has a small team based in Melbourne, co-located with other NGOs in Fitzroy. Our preference is that this role would work with our team in Melbourne at a regular time each week. Our main office is based in Wynyard, Sydney, a five-minute walk from Wynyard Station.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Reviewing and updating our activist resources on our website.
  • Supporting the creation of supporter journeys to encourage supporters to deepen their involvement with ActionAid Australia.
  • Maintaining engagement channels to keep interested supporters up to date and provide opportunities for them to take action.
  • Developing resources and opportunities for activists and other supporters to take action in ways that increase our campaigns’ impact, including by creating toolkits, resources, and content for social media.
  • Supporting Sydney and Melbourne activist groups through tasks such as check ins with members to maintain engagement, support with activity planning, and organisation of logistics for trainings.

Selection criteria

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • 4-5 hours available per week with regular team meetings.
  • Computer literacy and ability to use phone and email systems, as well as access to your own computer.
  • Experience with digital organising tools and web editing – or a willingness to learn quickly.
  • Confidence across a range of social media platforms.
  • Experience organising events, at least at a small scale.
  • Respect for ActionAid’s independence and an ability to work within this ethos.
  • Excellent organisational skills to keep track of activists, events, and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Passion for social justice and the role that everyday people can play to achieve a fairer and more equitable world.
  • A personable, people-oriented nature.
  • A demonstrated commitment and passion for women’s rights.
  • Experience working with a wide range of people.
  • A commitment to ActionAid’s values (see page 5 of this document) and feminist leadership values.

What we will provide

  • The chance to connect with ActionAid supporters and staff in Australia and be part of an international organisation working in over 70 countries.
  • Connection with an international movement of supporters who believe in women’s rights and climate justice.
  • Resources on the issues that ActionAid works on: climate justice for women, international aid, global gender equality, and humanitarian crises.
  • The chance to contribute to the development of the grassroots strategy for ActionAid Australia.
  • Training in community organising and volunteer support.
  • Training in using ActionAid’s online systems.
  • The chance to contribute to our campaigns through supporting our activist network.
