G20 governments have just announced the suspension of debt payments for the world’s poorest countries until the end of 2020.

Low-income countries urgently need additional funds to respond to coronavirus. Yet they’re forced to divert funds away from essential health services that could save lives – to pay off crippling debt to international creditors.

Women ActionAid works with – from Vanuatu to Indonesia and Zimbabwe – are now facing a triple threat: a health crisis, an economic crisis, and a climate crisis. Lack of money for health services could be deadly.

But wealthy countries like ours can extend low-income countries an immediate lifeline to help save lives in this pandemic. We can:

  1. Push powerful institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G20 countries to cancel all debt repayments due in 2020 and give grants instead of loans
  2. Increase untied international aid to less developed countries to prevent and respond to coronavirus

ActionAid supporters like you can push the Australian Government to use its power and influence to work with the IMF and G20.

Call on Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and the Government to work with the IMF and G20 countries to cancel debt and increase aid to low-income countries.
