Australia’s largest oil and gas producer Woodside Energy will operate the Sangomar oil field in Senegal – just 100 km away from the coastal communities near Dakar.

The Sangomar project undermines the Paris Agreement, Woodside’s own approach on climate change, and poses a huge threat to women living in poverty in Senegal.

If this project goes ahead, it could have potentially devastating consequences for Senegal’s coastal communities –– especially women, who rely on the fishing industry to feed their families. They already face pressures due to overfishing and climate change, which will only get worse if this project continues.

Why Woodside's proposed Sangomar oil project is significant, controversial and high risk

Potential oil spill

In a recent submission to Efic (now Export Finance Australia), ActionAid, Jubilee and Caritas said that this deep water offshore oil development –– slated to go ahead this year –– flagrantly disregards international efforts to address the climate crisis, while putting an extremely sensitive ecosystem at risk. If an oil spill were to occur, it'd be devastating for coastal communities, the rich marine and coastal ecosystems. But it’s not just Senegal that could suffer –– it’s clear from the project’s own oil spill modelling that it'd also devastate the coastline of neighbouring countries including the Gambia.

Livelihoods and food security

This would be the first ever offshore oil development in an environment that's extremely sensitive and on which many communities rely on for their livelihoods and food security. If this project goes ahead, it could have potentially devastating consequences for Senegal’s coastal communities –– especially women, who're already struggling to feed their families due to the pressures of overfishing and climate change.

Chemical and noise pollution

Even if a major spill didn’t occur, it’s likely that Woodside’s venture will have unacceptable consequences for local communities and the environment through minor spills, discharge of chemicals and drill cuttings, and noise pollution.
